Christen Went from Retail to XBRL
Working for ParsePort
What is your job here at ParsePort?
“I started with ParsePort in the fall of 2020, and I have been on a steep learning curve ever since. I had never heard of XBRL when I started, and now I teach our customers how to use the different products. My job is sort of a mix between sales and support, while we have a dedicated sales team who makes sure we get new customers, I make sure our customers are happy – I make sure they stay.”
What is your favorite thing about working for ParsePort?
“I’m a people person, and as an account manager, I get to deal with a lot of different people from a lot of different places. We have customers from all over Europe, and it’s my job to help them get a handle on the various XBRL products, so they learn how to use them most efficiently. I get to fulfill a need, and that’s a great feeling.”
How would you explain what you do to your daughters?
“It’s funny you should ask. I actually sat down with my daughter who is 19 and tried to explain to her what XBRL and ESEF is. I even showed her the Excel sheets used for conversion, but she still doesn’t understand. I don’t blame her, though. It is a really nerdy solution we deal with. It’s even a challenge to explain to my friends, so I just say that I teach companies how to use a software tool for financial reporting.”
How has your career developed since starting with ParsePort?
“It is quite clear that ParsePort is on an exciting journey, and I believe that the journey is tied to the career development of everyone who works here. ParsePort is growing rapidly, and the journey is filled with a positive unpredictability. There are so many different challenges, that every day is filled with opportunities to grow and learn.”
Starting out in the World of XBRL
What did you do before you started working for ParsePort?
“Before I started at ParsePort I spent 20 years in the food retail industry working in different management positions in Denmark, Germany, Italy and even Georgia, so it was definitely a big step out of my comfort zone to work with XBRL, but it was a step I needed to take.“
What would you say to people who apply for a job at ParsePort?
“If I could give one piece of advice to anyone who considers applying for a job here, it would be to go for it. No matter what your background is, you can excel here. Very few of us had any knowledge about XBRL and ESEF when we started, and the learning curve is steep, but if you arm yourself with earnest curiosity, you will do great.”
